Charity rides, walks or runs...it your choice

With all the talk about spring and the warm weather also comes the endless solicitations (good cause solicitations) for charity rides, runs and walks. There are so many out there you can't do them all.

What are you to do?

Here is my suggestion - look over what you like to do, either bike, run or walk. Look for a cause that draws you in that you might have some kind emotional connection to (like the Cycle for Life)

Once you find the event that is to your liking jump in! A lot of these event have helpful web-sites to get you started with donations and getting your self physically ready for the event.

Giving of ones self is the most gratifying feeling ever, especially when it is for a good cause.

Enjoy, you won't regret it!

Meet Dave and Jody Perewitz

It's that time again - time for trade shows and consumer shows to start in abundance! The first motorcycle one in our area is this weekend. The Northeast Motorcycle Expo comes to Hartford, Connecticut this weekend.

The Perewitz crew will exhibit, which means that Dave will be there signing autographs, posing for photos and chatting with attendees. If you are in the area, go meet him and check out all the cool bikes they'll have with them. Oh, and tell him that you want one of the Kryptonite posters!

This time Jody will not only be there, but she'll also be working on her own project. As we mentioned before, she is teaming with Sara Liberte to build a bike for charity right while you watch! She's been talking about the project on the Plog, too. It's been a lot of work for her, but it's all coming together and you'll see the build start tomorrow. Don't forget to buy a raffle ticket, too. You could win the motorcycle at the end of the expo series. All the money goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

I wear the patch, I support the Fund!

As a part of my daily routine, I was reading my usual motorcycle racing industry web sites this morning and I noticed an update on Morgan Broadhead (AMA Pro Road Race Manager and fellow WERA racer). Morgan was severely injured on September 28th during WERA/AMA National Challenge Series 750cc Superstock Qualifying at Jennings GP. He has a long road to recovery and needs to be transported back home to Utah. The motorcycle community has in one day contributed over $5,000 but his mom needs at least $14,000 to get him home.

I wear the patch on my leathers and I donate to the Red Flag Fund in support of injured and disabled road racers. To me it is a charity that would be there to support my friends and racing family but I hope it never has to. Match my $100 contribution! It’s easy…go to http://www.redflagfund.org/. They accept credit cards, paypal, cash, whatever!

Kryptonite and Dave Perewitz donated this cool trash can to the Red Flag Fund auction in July….a huge thank you to them!

Dave Zabriskie's Calling YOU out!

Have ever watched the Tour Day France and thought, "I can take him". Ok, me either....but maybe you've watched a race at some point and thought, "I can hang with him." Tomorrow's your chance if you live in or near the state of Utah.

As part of the Bikes for Kids Utah, current USA Time Trial Champion, Dave Zabriskie will race YOU, big talker. Yup, that's right. Bring your trash talkin' and give it a go. For $75, which goes to this great organization, you can race Dave on a USA Cycling sanctioned time trial course. Is there a catch? No...except that it is up Salt Lake's Traverse Ridge (that to me says "mountain").

If that's a stretch for you...'cause it is for me....you can participate in Bikes for Kids Utah on Saturday with Dave, too. There's a 5K family ride and a 50K with Dave and a metric century at 100K. Hopefully, it will be a nice fall day for a ride. Go on out and join 'em. I've only been in contact with Dave once...he visited our booth at Interbike in '06 (no not to see me...to say 'hey' to Bob Roll). He seemed very, very nice - I'm sure he'll be fun to ride with.

So, what is Bikes for Kids Utah? You can read all about them here, but basically they are an organization that started last year to provide "disadvantaged children with free bicycles as an inexpensive and fun way to get to school and as a hobby that helps them exercise as well as learn responsibility and safety."

The organization teaches them about bike safety, rules of the road and the importance of regular exercise. Last year they gave away....are you ready for this....they gave away 1,000 bikes! They are aiming to do so again this year. Amazing.

Kryptonite has been a proud supporter of this event the last two years. Seriously - kids, bikes and safety...it's a great thing for all involved.

We wish everyone involved tomorrow the time of their life and everyone a crisp, clear fall day to ride on Saturday.

A week full of summer wrap-ups

Here at Perewitz Cycle Fab we had a busy week September 17-23! There were so many events going on in one week no one at the Perewitz shop got a good nights rest.

It started on Tuesday with Kory's, our service manager, birthday! Another birthday gone with the wind! Next on Wednesday we had our last Bike Night and what a night!

Wednesday was a nice day for bike night. As Donna has stated we luck out and always seem to get good weather, although I don’t want to curse us so we’ll say we have always HAD good weather! Well, the bike night was a huge success! We never know how the last one is going to be because kids are back to school and it gets dark so much earlier.

Those things didn’t seem to stop the crowd though! The parking lot was full, the food line was long and there were numerous volunteers, who got a free Kryptonite lock, to do burnouts. The first one was on a complete custom motorcycle which is cool because usually it's stock bikes, not that those are bad! Anyway it was a great night and an even better way to end the season!

Next we had a long weekend full of events. We had our annual, invitation only charity event, the Fall Foliage Run. It started with a ride from our shop to the Cape, then dinner at our house for 200 people!

On Saturday we had a poker run and a lobster dinner with a live auction. Thanks to the high bidders on the auction items - hopefully we will have a good amount of money to donate to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. On Sunday everyone rode to Provincetown and came back to the Perewitz manor for an Italian dinner and some leftovers. What a weekend!

We skipped work Monday to clean up the house, get rid of the trash, put things away, and eat some great leftovers that have lasted all week! Phew, I am glad it is over but sad to see another season go!

Fall Foliage Run Weekend Raises Money for MS

It was a beautiful fall weekend on Cape Cod. The air was clear, the temperature was warm, most of the tourists were gone so traffic wasn't an issue and there was the sound of motorcycles all around! It was the Perewitz family's annual invitaional Fall Foliage Run Weekend. The FFR is for their motorcycle club, the Hamsters, and a few close friends.

It's a full weekend with a ride from the Perewitz Bridgewater shop to the Cape on Friday afternoon and a huge BBQ and silent auction at the Perewitz cape house. This year they even had a band playing in the back yard. Lots of fun and money was raised during the auction for the National MS Society.

Saturday dawned a little overcast, but still great weather for the annual Poker Run. Everyone had a great time riding with each other and enjoying the company at the different stops. The winner rec'd this sweeeeet, custom painted 'trash can'.

Saturday night was the big lobster & BBQ dinner and live auction where thousands of dollars were raised for the MS Society, which is a charity near and dear to their hearts and mine as well.

Local artist, Greg Vaughan donated a one-of-a-kind Fall Foliage Run painted horseshoe crab for the auction and presented the Perewitz family with this one for their trophy case at the shop. Talk about unique!

No event can be done without the hard work of many. Here is just part of the crew that spent their time making this event a success. Bravo gang!

And...of course.....there was cake....yummy cake....

Thanks to the Perewitz family for being so generous, putting on a fantastic weekend and supporting this great charity.

Congratulations Perewitz Family!

While at Sturgis the Perewitz family was presented with the 2nd Annual Chrome Heart Award from the Children's Care Hospital & School. The award is given each year to someone "in the motorcycle world whose philanthropic support and civic duty represents everything positive in the motorcycle industry". This year they chose Dave & his family. Very cool!

Since we've known them, we have seen first hand just how much this family gives of themselves to support different charities and funds. I don't know how they do it! I'm glad that the whole family was recognized because Dave is truly the front person but Susan, Jody, Jesse and Jaren help to make it all happen, too. They work the logistics and back end details of all their charity work. It's not easy, but they work together to give back and it's truly special to see. I can't think of a better family that deserved the award this year. Great photo of Dave & Susan with the award from Iron Works Magazine!

Not to mention....while they were in Sturgis, Dave played auctioneer for the annual Hamster USA auction and dinner where they raised over $200,000 for the Children's Care Center. The funds will help with physical, occupational and speech therapies to children with special needs in Western South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska.

The press release about this says..."Children’s Care of Rapid City served over 1200 children in the region last year through outpatient and outreach programs. It is affiliated with Children’s Care Hospital & School, based in Sioux Falls. Children’s Care is a private, independent, non-profit organization with a mission to help children with special needs reach their full potential. The organization as a whole served over 2500 children last year."

Pretty cool that the Perewitz family and the Hamsters help out this cause each year. Oh, what are the Hamsters? It's an international motorcycle group founded by Dave and some of his friends years ago. From what I can tell, they are a great group of guys who all give of their time, talent and monetary donations to many, many charities across the country. Clearly, they were all more than generous out in Sturgis at their annual banquet!

Booty Update

Last month, Stuart N. checked in from our parent company to talk about a team doing the 24-Hours of Booty down in North Carolina. Turns out the whole team survived and raised a lot of money....here's his update.....




Who would have thought? They closed the Booty Loop for 45 minutes at this year’s 24 Hours of Booty in Charlotte, NC. However, the thunderstorms did not prevent the Ingersoll Rand/Cool Breeze Cyclery team from raising over $16,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, The Keep Pounding Fund, and The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas. The event as a whole raised $736,925 for these noteworthy charities.

The 24 Hours of Booty is the one and only 24-hour road cycling charity event in the country. This unique and exciting event is fully supported on a traffic-free, gently rolling loop - known for years as the "Booty Loop" - that is situated in the beautiful Myers Park neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Once a year the Booty Loop is closed to traffic to host cyclists from around the country as they ride in honor and support of the cancer community. The goal of the 24 Hours of Booty is to provide an extraordinary event that is safe, fun, and open to all levels of cycling ability, while bringing cancer awareness to the community and raising funds for noteworthy cancer charities.

This marked the third year that Ingersoll Rand employees teamed up to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and local cancer initiatives. This year’s team consisted of more than 20 individuals from Ingersoll Rand, Cool Breeze Cyclery, and Cisco Systems. In total, the team rode over 1700 miles and 130 hours in honor and support of those whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The Ingersoll Rand/Cool Breeze Cyclery Team would like to thank all of those people who supported this year’s event. We look forward to riding again next year!!!

My Weekend at Iowa Speedway

We returned on Sunday after what was a fun and exciting weekend at Iowa Speedway. This was the first time that motorcycles have ever run this new 1.3 mile road course. So in the inaugural year of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series we are all anxious to see what comes of a first trip to a new track.

I have to say, the facility was outstanding. The fans in Iowa are diehard and so enthusiastic to see racers. They were very welcoming and made the event a lot of fun.

I didn’t race this weekend due to my on-going back spasms and pain. Since I help run the team there is no shortage of things that need to be done. I stayed busy all weekend writing press releases, taking photos and updating the Team RightsforBikers.com Web site. I enjoy attending the entrant meetings, rider meeting and organizing logistics of the team. We have a great team so sometimes that comes easy even though there is so much to do.

The team had 3 practice sessions: one Thursday, one Friday and a quick practice on Saturday. The riders all got out there and learned the track and starting picking up some good lap times. Our SST bike (Suzuki SV1000) ridden by Mark Crozier and Nathan Dressman ran the second fastest in practice and usually that is a good indication of the outcome of the race. My fill-in rider, Justin Filice was amazing. He was running almost as fast on the SV650 as some were on the bigger bikes. It was fun to watch him and his dad (Jimmy Filice) out in practice. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Jimmy, click on his name…he is well known in motorcycle racing. Jimmy was showing Justin the lines and the way around the track and Justin was picking up time.

Race day was getting last minute details completed, such as lights on the bikes (since the even falls past sun down, lights are required and PIAA, our sponsor really helped us out here). As with any and all MOTO-ST events, we have an autograph session for the fans. We couldn’t believe the turn-out! They were lined up for more than an hour to walk through and get ever rider’s autograph. Different to motorcycle racing, but common in NASCAR are the rider introductions on stage. This was the first time riders had done this and it really added to the show.

The race began at 6:30pm CT and was a 3-hour long race. Our team had 2 podium finishes for which the entire team – crew and riders – was extremely excited. We have worked so hard to get to the top of the podium and we were within 40 seconds behind the leader when a red flag came out and the race was called with 30 minutes remaining. This race was a testament to the strength of the team and we can’t wait for the 8 Hours at Daytona in October!

Oh and by the way…at Road America for the Red Flag Fund auction…the custom painted trash can by Dave Perewitz raised $225! All the items auctioned off can be found here. The proceeds go to help injured motorcycle racers. A great cause for a great community of people.

Kristopher Holmes Memorial Ride

Last year many of us at Kryptonite had the pleasure of getting to know some members of the Holmes family at the Perewitz Bike Nights. The reason we got to meet Donna, Kim and the rest wasn't a happy one - their son and brother, Kristopher, had just been killed in a motorcycle accident. It was a difficult time for them, to say the very least, but they attended their first bike night with Kristopher's friends and riding buddies to find out what the culture was all about - why he loved riding so much.

Before you knew it, they were constant attendees of the bike nights. Being the generous folks that the Perewitz's are, they started a 50/50 raffle where the money raised would go to Kristopher's favorite charities, the Fisheries and Wildlife funds. They raised hundreds of dollars over the summer.

This year, the Holmes family decided to remember Kristopher by setting up a scholarship fund and held the 1st Annual Kristopher Holmes Memorial Bike Ride to support the fund. The ride took place this past Saturday, starting at Perewitz Cycle Fab. It was a beautiful day and my estimate would be that hundreds of motorcyclists took part. We were happy to help support the event and hope that a lot of money was raised for the fund.

Here are some pictures from the day....although I never met him, I think Kristopher would have been pleased at what his family accomplished. Hope to see you all at the 2nd annual ride next summer!

24 Hours of Booty is Around the Corner

Our parent company has quite a few people that are action sports enthusiasts. You've met some here and will meet more as time goes on. Today, one of the guys that keeps all our technology up and running shares his passion for an event he's participating in soon.

Here's some information on the 24 Hours of Booty by Stuart N.....

This July 27 and 28, over 15 individuals from Ingersoll Rand and Cool Breeze Cyclery will join together to participate in the 24 Hours of Booty.

The 24 Hours of Booty is a solo and relay cycling event around the scenic "Booty Loop" located in beautiful Myers Park in Charlotte , NC . The origin of the name is unclear, but for years the Booty Loop has been one of the most popular loops to Charlotte-area runners, walkers, and cyclists. These groups can be found exercising and training on the Booty Loop almost every day of the year. The 24 Hours of Booty is a fully supported event that provides a fun and relaxed setting for participants and supporters while challenging us to ride… and ride… and ride. A personal challenge that becomes even more meaningful when you consider why we are riding in the first place.

The 24 Hours of Booty is the one and only 24-hour road cycling charity event in the country. The goal of the 24 Hours of Booty is to provide an extraordinary event that is safe, fun, and open to all levels of cycling ability, while bringing cancer awareness to the community and raising funds for noteworthy cancer charities. The 24 Hours of Booty is a fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the following local cancer iniatives: The Keep Pounding Fund and The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas.

The Spokesmen, Nicole Races & The Tour de France

Hey everyone - sorry for being out of touch for so many days. I'm on vacation, if you couldn't guess. Ok, I was in the office Tuesday, but you know how it goes - the day before a vacation is always the busiest trying to get everything done, right? Well, that's exactly what happened with me. That, and the podcast.

Towards the end of last year I was asked to become part of The Spokesmen podcast. I was completely flattered to be asked by the esteemed panel and said, 'yes' right away. I've missed more than I've participated in, I think, but my cohorts are very understanding. When I get the chance I am right there, though. Episode 20 is up and ready for your listening pleasure. We covered a lot of topics including the Tour de France starting in London, the UCI Rider Pledge, cyclingnews.com being bought, Big Wheeled Ballywho and a host of other things. Check it out.

I'm sitting on my porch right now with the dog. I'm having some Smartfood and reading a book (ok, I'll be reading again in a minute...). She's keeping an eye on the backyard. You know, just to make sure the squirrels and bunnies stay in check.

This is just a little breather in what promises to be a busy weekend for some of us. Nicole Hoffman and her team are competing in the Road America 500K this weekend in Wisconsin. Go Nicole! She'll also be participating in the Red Flag Fund Auction while she's in town. The Red Flag Fund is new to me, but it sounds like it is a great organization. They provide support to injured road racers. Nicole will be checking in sometime next week to let us know how it all went.

We all know where our friend Bob Roll is this weekend. London. At the Tour DAY France! I can't believe it all starts tomorrow! I know I said I wasn't thrilled about watching, but you know I'll be checking out a bunch of stages. So...who is my pick? I think I said already, but I pick Vinokourov. For the first time, Bob and I agree on my pick. That should be a good thing....

So, who is your pick for Le Tour's podium spots? C'mon, I know you've all got a favorite...

My "Clean" Office

You all saw the before photos the other day of what my office looked like as I was preparing to ship out products to support grassroots events and initiatives. Here is the after shots from Friday afternoon.

Where did it all go? Oregon, California, Pennsylvania, Utah, Florida, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New York to name just a few that I can remember off the top of my head right now (not being in the office - it's Sunday, after all). We'll get a full list of the supported events up on our website later this week.

My Messy Office

So...why didn't I post this morning, or at least by early afternoon? Take a look at my office...I'm hoping this explains things a little bit. Time to support some events! Here's the before...the 'after' will be on Friday sometime....I hope. At least that is the plan.

What a mess, huh??

We support about 100 events each year and most of that product is sent out by one person...me! As you can see, I'm not neat about it. But, as with any cleaning project - it must get worse before it gets better, right? By Friday I should be able to see my floor, at least most of it, and a lot of events will be happy come next week. All kinds of events - alley cats, Bike Nights, kids bike rodeos, charity auctions and the list goes on and on. We support a lot of action sports related charity events - it's one of the things I really love about my job. :) Bikes for Kids Utah and Trips for Kids - lots of stuff coming your way!
