Cha-cha-cha-changes....

Thanks to my very good friends at Bicycle Retailer & Industry News, the cat's out of the bag on some big news for me personally.

After 8+ great, great years here at Kryptonite I'll be starting a new adventure on July 1st. I've been holding off writing about it here because then that makes it very real and, to be honest, although it's a fabulous opportunity and I'm excited about it, I'll very much miss both the bike and motorcycle industries. This has been my home for all these years and I'm grateful to the people in both industries for welcoming me with open arms and making me part of these fabulous groups.

The element of any job that makes it or breaks it is the people. I've been extremely fortunate to work with some of the best people in the industry here at Kryptonite. And, I've interacted with some other intelligent, wonderful people throughout both these markets. It's been a blast and I'll miss the daily interaction. But, I am happy knowing that some of those friendships can't be broken by just a job change. For that I'm extremely thankful.

However...having said all of that....I'm not going to far...well, it's a big leap in some respects and not so much in another. Next week I'll start my new role as Director of Web/New Media for our parent company, Ingersoll Rand. So, if you think you've seen the last of me online, you are sadly, sadly mistaken! The absolute passion that I have for all things new & social media will be parlayed into a full time job! How cool is that?! I'm like a little kid waiting for Christmas!!

Know what's cooler? I'll be working in Ingersoll Rand's New Jersey office a couple of days a week and then I'll be spending the rest of the time here in the Kryptonite office. Although I won't be doing any Kryptonite work, I'll still be at the same email and phone number. Yes, I'm a lucky duck.

And...to continue the good luck....because she knows it would be like quitting an addiction cold turkey, Karen has decided to let me still be a guest blogger here! You know I'll have rants about the Tour Day France and, like it or not, you'll be hearing them. I'll still be down at the Perewitz shop and will let you know what's going on there, from time to time. And, in general, I might just have some fun action sports things to say - I'll jump on and let you know what's on my mind.

So, it won't be long before you are being introduced to another Team Kryptonite member right here. Until then, I'm still around...you can't get rid of me that easily! And, don't worry, there's plenty for me to write about before the 1st...stay tuned!

Oh What A Night...

The Women's Riding Essentials at Perewitz Cycle Fab last night was nothing less than fantastic! We had a great group of women ranging from veteran riders to completely new riders. Some have a motorcycle, some are on their 3 or 4th motorcycle, one just bought her first and a couple more are looking to purchase their first.

Not only did Nicole and Jody share their experiences and wisdom, but the camaraderie of the women was indescribable. They listened to each other, shared their experiences and formed new friendships that, I believe, will become new riding partners. I truly feel lucky to have shared in the evening.

So, Nicole, are you going to be kick starting Jody's Panhead?

Nicole fascinated us all by sharing her experiences of racing on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway.

Both ladies talked about being safe on the motorcycle and wearing the proper gear - helmets, gloves, jackets etc. They both want to be as protected as they can be when riding. Bright colors, like Jody's Icon jacket, are recommended so others on the road can see you.

It was a beautiful evening so we conducted the evening outside at the picnic tables. Susan and Jody put out a spread that would have fed an army! We ate and talked about motorcycles for hours on a lovely, relaxing June evening. How much better does it get than that?

Well.....it did....

At the end of the evening, Jody gave us a tour of the "inner sanctum" of Perewitz Cycle Fab. We got to see Jeff's new bike being built, Jody's Buell, some of the other projects they have going on (that shall remain secret!) and then....Jody showed us her newest creation. She's building a custom bike from the ground up. It should be completed by Sturgis. Here's a sneak peek just for the ladies.

We got to see it from all angles and hear all the plans she has for it, but we'll leave you with just the, unfinished, front view. I'll leave out the details about what's unfinished on the front. You'll just have to stay tuned over on the Plog (Perewitz blog) to see the finished masterpiece. Or, head to Sturgis to see it for yourself!

All in all, it was a fantastic evening!

Women's Riding Essentials Class

I think I promised to tell y'all this yesterday, but we are getting ready for a trade show and it's hectic here. Sorry for the delay.

We are really happy to announce Kryptonite's "Riding Essentials for Women" class. That's right. We know you ladies are out there. We know you are either thinking about buying your first motorcycle/getting your mc license or you have just purchased a motorcycle. You've got a few questions to get you going, but the only way to learn is to ask 'the guys'. Hmmm...sometimes that's intimidating, right? We've got the solution!

Nicole Hoffman and Jody Perewitz will be leading four 1-2 hour "Riding Essentials for Women" classes at select shops around the country. Gee, guess where the first one will be? C'mon...you know the answer to this one....yup, right at Perewitz Cycle Fab in June. We'll keep you posted here as to the date.

It's a FREE class for women to come out and learn from two ladies who are not only great riders, but are a wealth of information. They bring some serious talents to the table - safety tips, simple maintenance, info about riding gear you might need, resources available (online and at tracks) and, of course how to keep your ride safe and secure.

So, if you are a gal who wants to get more into riding, stay tuned....these ladies will not only share their experiences and tips, but they'll answer your questions, too. Any question you have about their backgrounds, Nicole's racing, Jody's building of motorcycles, or how to get on a bike for the first time - they'll answer them all.

We want to bring more women into shops and help put more women on motorcycles. It's not just about creating a pink product (no, no pink locks coming), it's about assisting women in this fun adventure.

Now, just to be fair, I was totally scooped on our own news. Thanks to Marilyn at Ironworks Magazine and Genevieve at Womenridersnow.com for supporting our efforts! And, I believe Ms. Jody scooped me, too, just now.

All Things Perewitz

I went down to visit our friends at Perewitz Cycle Fab yesterday. I spent a lot of time with Dave, Susan and Jody talking over some things for next year. Got to see Dee and catch up with her for a bit. Jaren was on her way out the door (I'll bet she was going holiday shopping with the days ticking). Of course I got to spend some quality time with my buds Cheech, Louie & Zipp, too. Zipp even decided to take a nap on my lap. I just love that dog.

Didn't see even one of the guys in the shop because they were busy, busy, busy! But, I did pick up a few things I thought I'd share...

Dave and Susan just returned from Ft. Lauderdale where they were enjoying some warm weather and partcipating in the Toys in the Sun Run. It's a HUGE event with over 30,000 people. Can you imagine?! It's billed as the world's largest toy run. I wouldn't doubt it. They even close down Route 95, which is the main route from Maine to Florida, for hours! That's something to see. As a matter of fact, I found a couple of photos, one of the riders and one of the spectators. I'm sure there are more photos and I'd love to see them so leave a link in the comments section!

I hear that not only did Dave participate but he was also in the front of the parade of motorcycles with none other than Aerosmith's main man, Steven Tyler. It seems Steven has put his name on a line of motorcycles now. Good deal. That Dave knows just about everyone doesn't he?

And then there is Miss Jody....as most people who have ever been to Perewitz Cycle Fab or seen them on the road know, Jody is very involved with the business end of things - marketing, apparel, shows, travel etc. etc. etc. What many people don't know is that Jody builds motorcycles, too. It's not something she does all the time, but she can and she does. Well, now more people are about to find out about this talent of hers (seriously, do you doubt that there is talent in her genes?!). Anyway...Jody and Sara Liberte announced this week that they are building a Bobber for a Cure. They are going to do this live during three different Northeast Motorcycle Expos this winter/spring - Boston, Hartford and Long Island. The press release has all the dates.

Now, not only will you be able to see them working on this motorcycle - building it and rebuilding it three times - but you'll be able to buy raffle tickets and possibly win it in the end. All proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. That's very cool!

What else? Oh, I've started to write for Life at Perewitz, the "Plog" of Perewitz Cycle Fab. Since I was there last night, I'll have my second post soon so visit often and find out who is on Santa Susan's Naughty List! You might not believe who it is!

And, finally, the gang at Perewitz Cycle Fab want to wish you a happy hoilday season. Their holiday open house is this weekend from 11-4. Santa will even be there to see the kids. I'll be there in the afternoon for sure. All the details are on their website.

As a part of my daily routine, I was reading my usual motorcycle racing industry web sites this morning and I noticed an update on Morgan Broadhead (AMA Pro Road Race Manager and fellow WERA racer). Morgan was severely injured on September 28th during WERA/AMA National Challenge Series 750cc Superstock Qualifying at Jennings GP. He has a long road to recovery and needs to be transported back home to Utah. The motorcycle community has in one day contributed over $5,000 but his mom needs at least $14,000 to get him home.

I wear the patch on my leathers and I donate to the Red Flag Fund in support of injured and disabled road racers. To me it is a charity that would be there to support my friends and racing family but I hope it never has to. Match my $100 contribution! It’s easy…go to http://www.redflagfund.org/. They accept credit cards, paypal, cash, whatever!

So, we made a pretty significant change to the Kryptonite website this week. We changed the home page to show 4 different people and hear, in their words, why they are bonded to their lifestyle. We’d like to thank Tim Masiguy Jackson for being the official greeter to the site for so long as well as Jody Perewitz, Kate Cross and Rob Zuraski for being the illustrious first group on the site. But, when we debuted the site it was with the understanding that the group on the front would be ever changing every 6-8 weeks or so. Ok, so it’s more than 6 weeks since April, but hey, we finally got there.

We’re pumped to have this next group of folks on our site. They represent Kryptonite through either their employment here or their great partnership with us. Not to mention they are darn cool people. Here’s a little more on each of them.


The Bike Tab
Roland Burns is the co-founder/owner of R.E.Load Bags in Philly. Have you seen the exquisite custom bags that come out of there? No? Go look. Right now. I’ll wait…..Did you check out the custom stock? No? Seriously, these are some kick *ss bags. Go back…I’ll wait….

Not only does Roland create art, he’s also a blogger. Check it out – he puts up some photos of the total custom bags there. Sweet!

Out and about in Philly

Ro organizes messenger races in Philly, too, and he couldn’t be nicer to work with- The Rocky races, North American Championships and a bunch others I’m sure I don’t know about. He’s a man on the move – all the time. But, he did slow down long enough to come visit the booth at Interbike where he and his friends got a sneak peek at his new page. I think it’s great that he’ll be the welcoming face to Kryptonite for the next couple of months.

The Motorcycle Tab
Jeff Clark’s from North Carolina and is the co-founder/owner of The Cycle Xchange (TCX), a custom motorcycle shop. They both build and service all kinds of custom bikes – one of which you see on the front of our website. Jeff is also the driver of the TCX/Budweiser Burnout Bike. It’s a TCX built bike that has a NASCAR back tire that they do burnouts with…and then the crew changes the tire and Jeff goes at it again. It’s kinda fun to watch. Check it out.

Not only does he put in more than a full week at The Cycle Xchange, but he’s a pretty busy guy on the weekends, too. He’s a proud dad of very active kids who are off at one sporting event or another and then on Sundays it’s all about racing. Not in front of the TV or in the stands like you and me….he’s a member of Dale Earnhardt Junior’s pit crew! He’s the guy that keeps Dale Junior fueled up during the race. You can see Jeff, Dale Junior and Brandon Bernstein together in this new video from Sturgis this year.

The Ski/Snowboard Tab
Chances are that if you have visited Perewitz Cycle Fab you’ve met Kory Souza. If you’ve brought your motorcycle in for service, he’s worked on it and ‘made it all better’, I’m sure. He’s the behind the scenes guy that gets it done. He works hard on all the motorcycles that come in, he loads and unloads the haulers going to the shows and he’s part of the road crew that makes sure all those gorgeous bikes get where they are going safely.

When he’s not in the shop, you can find Kory racing around on one of his “50s”, mini bike. I’ve seen the impromptu races in the parking lot on a slow day, which are too fun. Last year he organized an inside 50s bike race inside at a local go-kart track. All the proceeds went to the National MS Society. Kory has a heart of gold for sure.

With all this powersports action, why the ski/snowboard tab? Easy….it's hard to keep any action sports person quiet for too long. When there’s too much snow on the ground to ride motorcycles, Kory heads for New Hampshire to snowboard, of course. He's equally as passionate about that.

Specialty Tab
Eric Anastasia is truly a member of Team Kryptonite. He’s our Eastern Regional Manager and resident hiking and climbing nut. All of that gear that you see in the photo isn’t staged or borrowed; it’s all his. The guy has toys – something tells me that this isn’t all the gear either. It’s just a feeling I have. And, I’m not talking about the motorcycle either (yup, he’s got one of those, too).

Eric started in the marketing department here, but recently "defected" to sales. We tease him about that all the time, but it’s been a great move for him and he’s good at what he does. I think he likes traveling around the East Coast to find more places to hike and camp…just a theory.

If you are on the East Coast and own a bicycle or powersports shop or frequent one, chances are you'll meet Eric.

Perewitz Bike Night Tonight

It's the last Bike Night at Perewitz Cycle Fab tonight. Looks like it is going to be a gorgeous Fall evening here in Massachusetts. If you are in the area, c'mon by. Roby and I will both be there.

Congratulations Perewitz Family!

While at Sturgis the Perewitz family was presented with the 2nd Annual Chrome Heart Award from the Children's Care Hospital & School. The award is given each year to someone "in the motorcycle world whose philanthropic support and civic duty represents everything positive in the motorcycle industry". This year they chose Dave & his family. Very cool!

Since we've known them, we have seen first hand just how much this family gives of themselves to support different charities and funds. I don't know how they do it! I'm glad that the whole family was recognized because Dave is truly the front person but Susan, Jody, Jesse and Jaren help to make it all happen, too. They work the logistics and back end details of all their charity work. It's not easy, but they work together to give back and it's truly special to see. I can't think of a better family that deserved the award this year. Great photo of Dave & Susan with the award from Iron Works Magazine!

Not to mention....while they were in Sturgis, Dave played auctioneer for the annual Hamster USA auction and dinner where they raised over $200,000 for the Children's Care Center. The funds will help with physical, occupational and speech therapies to children with special needs in Western South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska.

The press release about this says..."Children’s Care of Rapid City served over 1200 children in the region last year through outpatient and outreach programs. It is affiliated with Children’s Care Hospital & School, based in Sioux Falls. Children’s Care is a private, independent, non-profit organization with a mission to help children with special needs reach their full potential. The organization as a whole served over 2500 children last year."

Pretty cool that the Perewitz family and the Hamsters help out this cause each year. Oh, what are the Hamsters? It's an international motorcycle group founded by Dave and some of his friends years ago. From what I can tell, they are a great group of guys who all give of their time, talent and monetary donations to many, many charities across the country. Clearly, they were all more than generous out in Sturgis at their annual banquet!

The "Deadliest Catch" - Caught!

Last summer, our friend Dave Perewitz participated in Discovery Channel's famed Biker Build-Off. Which he won, by the way....

The film crew Discovery sent was headed up by the producer/lead camera man for one of the channel's most popular shows, "The Deadliest Catch". We met him and got to see his work both on the ground and in the air (they shot from a helicopter, too). He did some great filming during the two weeks in Bridgewater and the week or two heading to, and at, the voting in Sturgis.

This weekend, Doug is getting married. He won't be strapped to the back of a truck, I don't think, unless Dave has something planned while he's there that I don't know about. But there will be white water rafting and somewhat of a pirate theme from what I hear...not sure what that means, but I'm sure it will be fun.

Bonded Together

I have been around the motorcycle industry my whole 24 years of life. Just because you are born into something doesn’t mean that you are going to like it, but in my case, I love it!

At an age as young as 5, I was riding four wheelers and dirt bikes. I was defiantly a tomboy. I played with my older brother Jesse and his friends more than my own. As I got older I guess I grew out of the tomboy stage but I never lost my interest in riding.

Honestly I had never ridden a motorcycle until I was about 17. I had always ridden dirt bikes so I had no doubt I could do it I just never tried. The whole Perewitz family was in Daytona one year and my brother just randomly said, “Hey you want to ride my bike?” Ya sure I’ll give it a try. I rode it a couple of miles and came back with bugs in my teeth because you couldn’t get the smile off my face! From that point on my bond with motorcycle has only grown to be as strong as a “New York Fahgetaboutit”.

Tossing Goodies to the Crowd at a Perewitz Bike Night - Summer, 2006

I work now full time for the family business. I have a Bachelor Degree in Political Science that will, hopefully, be useful someday. But for now the best education I can get is with motorcycles. The whole motorcycle world has become like an extended family. We go to shows all around the country and I look forward to the different people at each place.

I have a few different bikes now of my own and also have gotten involved in building a few around the shop trying to learn as much as I can. I have a different variety of motorcycles myself. I have to say my two favorites are my 1963 Panhead and my Buell Firebolt. The Panhead is a classic that gets all the older generation looking at it because they can appreciate what it is and my Firebolt gets younger generations.

As you can see my passion is with motorcycles; this is where Kryptonite comes in. They have been endorsing my father for about 2 years now and I have defiantly formed a bond with their products and, most of all, their employees. When I go somewhere with my bikes I know that they are safe because Kryptonite is protecting them.

While I am writing this I am realizing that motorcycles are what many of my bonds with things started from. I have a bond with my brother for letting me ride his bike, with motorcycles, my job, my father, the motorcycle industry, and those great companies like Kryptonite that provide an excellent product. I defiantly have some unbreakable bonds that only get stronger!

Jeremy Mayfield's New Motorcycle

If you were in Myrtle Beach for Bike Week a couple of weeks ago you may have seen NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield cruising around on his brand new Perewitz custom motorcycle. And, if it wasn't Jeremy, it was Dave Perewitz himself since he rode it a bit down there, too.

The professional photos aren't done yet, but I did get a peek at the bike last week and it is just another sweet creation by the folks at Perewitz Cycle Fab. Personally, I like this paint job better than the one on Tony Stewart's bike, but that's just me. As a matter of fact, it's my new computer wallpaper. Check it out.

Road Warrior Powerhouse

What do you get when you combine 60+ years of action sports industry experience with a great product line? A dynamic Kryptonite road team! We are completely tickled to announce our brand new sales team to the world. Ok, so I'm excited, and I think I can speak for everyone else here, too.

One is very familiar to all of our dealers and distributors and to you blog readers – Nadine Fallon-Nassif. She describes herself as a “Jill of all trades”, but I like to think of her as just born into the bicycle industry. She couldn’t help but be a lover of bicycles since, I believe, her dad at one time had 20+ in their house. I’ve got a bad memory – could have even been more; the guess is probably on the low side.

Not only does she love bicycles, she’s had extensive experience in retail, too. She’s grown to love motorcycles and works with us at a lot of the Perewitz Bike Nights and other distributor events.

I don’t remember being at Kryptonite where I didn’t know Nadine either as someone working at one of our dealers or working side by side with her. She’s got great passion for this industry.

We don't have a photo of Nadine right now as she was on the road when the photos were taken - we'll capture her soon and post one up!

Nadine is now being joined by 2 new ‘top guns’ of their respective industries. Craig Glab is our new Central Regional Manager. What a firecracker! He’s spent just about 20 years in the powersports industry and is in the process of building his own custom motorcycle. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it is ready for Sturgis. He can’t wait to start meeting all our dealers, including the bicycle dealers. When he walked in to our home office for the first time last week he was a little timid about the bicycle side, but by the time he left, he was on his way to pick out a bicycle and wanted to talk to me about racing an allycat. Oh boy….

Craig Glab fits right in here at Kryptonite

Don Shipman is our new Western Regional Manager. He is so dialed into the bicycle scene around northern California it’s just wild. He’s been in the industry for about 25 years, too, and even founded Blazing Saddles, a bicycle rental company in northern Cal. He’s pretty excited to start diving into the powersports piece of our business, too. I think he’ll dazzle them with his shear enthusiasm for all things two-wheeled.

Out & About This Weekend

It's Motorcycle Awareness Month and Kryptonite is supporting a couple of motorcycle related events this weekend. If you live near Concord, North Carolina and want to participate in a great charity event, check out the 3rd Annual Hendrick Charity Ride on Sunday. Motorcycle riders have raised over $130,000 the last two years for charity. This year they are expecting many more than last year's 2,500 participants and will raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Levine Children's Hospital.

This year the event will end at Lowe's Motor Speedway with a BBQ, music, rides by the Richard Petty Driving Experience, Rick Hendrick himself will be there and raffles to give away race tickets, sheet metal from race cars and, of course, Kryptonite locks. Since the NASCAR race is only in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday night, you never know what race driver or crew chief might just show up and ride, too.

As much as I'd like to be in NC for that event, I can't be in two places on the same weekend. I'm happy to be right here in New England this weekend. The Kryptonite team will be in Bridgewater, MA at the Perewitz Open House on Saturday. There will be food, music, activities for the kids, dogs, lock give aways, prizes tossed from the roof (but not the locks!),

and lots and lots of gorgeous motorcycles like this one, of course!

Come on out and join this motley crew....

The Kryptonite team will be there in full force and we'll be raffling off something pretty sweet for charity...not going to tell you what it is, but you'll want one....really, you will.

Tony Stewart's Perewitz Motorcycle

NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart (aka Smoke) likes pretty much anything that goes fast from dirt tracks to super speedways. He's recently added a brand new motorcycle to his collection that probably fits into that category, too. Not just any motorcycle....a custom Perewitz motorcycle.

Thanks to our close relationship with the Perewitz team, we were able to get some photos of the new creation. By all accounts, Tony loves the bike. We can see why!

Motorcycle Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Please be careful and always look for motorcyclists, and cyclists of course, when driving. All the time, but especially in the summer months.

It's nice to see, in Massachusetts, that there are signs, like the one above, around and that the registry of motor vehicles is placing the same slogan on their envelopes this month. In Missouri, Gov. Matt Blunt endorsed Motorcycle Awareness Month last week.

A Walking Weekend

Unlike my fellow Kryptoniters Roby and Nadine, I'm not a huge rider. I do have a bike that I love and I do get out in the summer, but not for the long rides like Roby. More of a casual cyclist. When I ride I like to look at the houses I'm passing, or the flowers in the yards. Casual.

However, I do walk a lot, especially in the three seasons that are reasonable for that here in New England. I admit to being a winter woosie and choose the treadmill then. But, this past Saturday there wasn't a need for the treadmill.

I headed down to Hyannis with Jody Perewitz, some of her family and three of their dogs for the MS Challenge Walk. The National MS Society had multiple walks going on in Massachusetts that day, which turned out to be a perfect walking day. The sun was peeking through the clouds, the temps were in the high 50s, and there really wasn't a breeze until we got to Craigville Beach, which we expected. Even then it was just a little breeze, not a gusting wind.

92 people walked 6.2 miles and collectively we raised $25,000 to help end this terrible disease. It's one that has hit close to home for me; my cousin has lived with it for over 30 years now and I have two other good friends who also live with it. Although 6.2 miles wasn't difficult for me, they were truly my inspiration for getting out and doing the walk. I'm glad I did. Not only did we help with a great cause, but we also had a fun time chatting and playing with the dogs all along the route.
